Cleaning up the beach and protecting marine life
18 March 2022

As a shipping line, PIL depends on the sea for its key source of income. As such, it has the responsibility to protect the ecological balance of the oceans. As part of ongoing efforts to reinforce in PIL’s employees in Singapore the importance of protecting the marine ecosystem, PIL organised a clean-up activity for 30 employees at Singapore’s Selimang Beach in the afternoon of 18 March 2022. Selimang Beach is also known as Eagle Point, and it is near Sembawang Park in the northern part of Singapore.

The beach clean-up was organised with the help of Green Nudge, a sustainability consultancy in Singapore. While embarking on this activity, the 30 PIL colleagues learnt that beach clean-ups help to remove plastic pollution from the marine ecosystem and thus protect local marine wildlife. Indeed, we found a large amount of plastics along the beach, from plastic bottles, to plastic bags and straws.

After spending nearly two hours at the beach, the team collected a total of over 280 kg of trash, and the colleagues felt immensely satisfied that they contributed a small part to protecting the sea which PIL vessels ply daily 24/7 all around the world.

More importantly, this demonstrated PIL’s continual commitment towards sustainability as a key business focus.
