Today, 16 June 2022, marks PIL’s first anniversary in becoming a signatory to The Buckingham Palace Declaration of the United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce, to demonstrate our commitment to support the tackling of illegal wildlife and timber trafficking.

Over the last year, we worked on fulfilling our commitment including strengthening our processes involving knowing our customers, and checking against databases of parties with records of past participation in illicit wildlife and timber trade.

In early 2022, as part of our education process, we reiterated to our customers the importance of accurate declaration of cargo by implementing a US$30,000 per container charge for mis-declaration of dangerous goods.

In addition, PIL became a member of the World Shipping Council (WSC) in 2022, and we actively participate in WSC’s Safety and Security Council which focuses on topics including the trafficking of drugs, illegal goods and contrabands.

Recognising the importance of employee training, we are finalising a training programme to create awareness among our colleagues at sea.

Looking ahead, PIL will continue to dedicate itself to meeting the commitments in the declaration and aim to contribute as a responsible shipping line to protecting wildlife.
