PIL celebrates with PSA on Official Opening of Tuas Port, 1 Sep 2022
02 September 2022

On 1 Sep 2022, PSA Singapore opened Tuas Port, with the first three berths operational at Phase One of the development. When fully operational in the 2040s, it is expected to be the world’s largest fully automated container terminal in a single location, with an annual handling capacity of 65 million TEUs.

PIL was privileged to have its 6600 TEU Singapore flag vessel Kota Cabar alongside at PSA Tuas Port as part of the proceedings of the grand official opening. Guest of Honour Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, together with Minister for Transport S Iswaran, Senior Minister of State for Transport Chee Hong Tat, the PSA team and other guests, watched as the fully automated cranes at Tuas Port demonstrated the moving of containers from Kota Cabar.

Mr SS Teo, Executive Chairman, PIL and Mr Lars Kastrup, CEO, PIL, congratulated the Master and crew of Kota Cabar for working well with PSA to deliver an outstanding performance.

In comments provided to Singapore’s Straits Times, Mr Kastrup said he is confident that the port’s productivity will soon be comparable with that of Pasir Panjang Terminal, with more than 25 to 30 container moves per hour. “As Tuas Port opens in phases, the container traffic currently split among the various city terminals will be migrated and consolidated, reducing inter-terminal transfer time and domestic emissions,” he added. “This would help bring down cost through economies of scale and improved efficiencies.”

As a home grown Singapore shipping line, PIL is immensely proud to play a role and witness first hand this historic moment of Tuas Port, which is a “game changer” and critical engine driving Singapore’s economy while reinforcing the country’s status as an international maritime centre.
